Dress Down Friday can cause equal amounts of panic and relief for guys, depending on your personal style and the clothes you are most comfortable in.

In order to de-mystify this workplace dress code mandate, here are my top hints and tips for dressing for success this Friday, and Fridays of the future…

  1. Dress Down Friday = Smart Casual… not to be mistaken for ‘wear whatever you want’. Dress code guidelines still apply, i.e.
  2. Half tailoring – this means having some cut or shape to one half of your outfit. It is the halfway house of full tailoring, which means a suit and shirt. Half tailoring can be a shirt and a pair of jeans, or a t-shirt or jumper with a pair of chinos or tailored trousers. I’ve popped some outfit inspiration on the right…
  3. In terms of what to avoid, rips, slogans and hoods are out – they are best left to the weekend rather than the workplace – keep your looks soft but with some sharpness in collars and cuffs. No large brand logos or patterns required!
  4. What key pieces will upgrade your casual wardrobe to work appropriate?

Indigo jeans – slim fit, not skinny

Fine knit jumper – round neck for a smaller frame, a small V-neck for a wider build

Fashion trainers – a smart yet casual finish to your look

White tee – a crew neck or Henley style works best, in thick cotton. Layer under an open shirt now or under a fine knit jumper when the temperatures drop further. Also works well as a base under a blazer

Open shirts – casual shirts are the gems of a wardrobe for a dress down Friday – as they can be worn buttoned up, or layered over a basic white t-shirt.

These key purchases can be rolled into your weekend look also, so the cost-per-wear on dress down Friday supports your off-duty style for months to come…

Happy Shopping!!
